Sam put the key in the lock and opened the door, revealing a short, but decorative hallway that led into a very spacious condominium.  Jack, who was standing behind her, extended his neck over her shoulder to get a better viewpoint of their accommodations for the next week.

“Nice!” Jack said, scooting around Sam as he walked into the living room.  “Now this will make for a great Thanksgiving.”  Jack said enthusiastically, as he continued to look around.  Sam, Daniel, and Teal’c made their way into the condo, each carrying their own suitcases.  Putting them down, they all began exploring the accommodations that General Hammond had set up for them.

The condo was decorated in neutral colors of off white and beige, accented by a large, overstuffed, tan leather couch.  Various paintings of abstract objects highlighted the walls in various shades of earth tones, and a large brick fireplace was nestled securely into one of the living room walls.  A sleeper sofa sat opposite it, yet was positioned well enough for anyone sitting on either couch to view the large television that sat comfortably in the entertainment center.  A balcony jutted out from the condo, giving way to a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains and city.  There was one full sized bathroom, and two bedrooms, one containing a king-sized bed, while the other bedroom was complemented with two full-sized beds.  And the kitchen was fairly good sized, with all the amenities needed to cook a good meal.

As Sam continued to look around, she gently shook her head and smiled to herself.   “So let me get this straight.  General Hammond felt that it would be a good idea for Teal’c to learn how to ski, just in case we should ever come across some sort of off-world terrain that would require knowing how to ski?”  She gave him a playful, knowing smile as she waited for his answer.

Jack looked at her with a slight hint of mischief in his eyes.  “As I’ve already told you, yes.  And who am I to turn down the opportunity for a little time with the slopes.  It just feels good to get out from underneath a mountain.  It will be refreshing to be on top of one, don’t you think?”

“And hey, it’s Thanksgiving in a few days,” Daniel interjected.  “It’s the perfect opportunity to take some time off, and to remember all that we have to be thankful for.”

“And who are we to turn down the General’s very gracious request to take some time off and enjoy ourselves, and the holiday.”  Jack said, approaching Sam, and placed a hand on her shoulder.  “Relax!  Your lab will be fine without you for a few days.  Trust me.  You aren’t afraid to take few days off, are you?!”

Sam responded by giving him a smirk, and then walked off towards the balcony to take a better look at the view.  It was an absolutely gorgeous morning.  The sky stretched out bigger and bluer then Sam had seen it in a long time.  The mountains were heavily covered in a blanket of sparkling white snow, and the surrounding evergreen trees glowed a brilliant green, as large clumps of snow randomly covered their branches.  The city of Breckenridge, Colorado was bustling with visitors and natives alike, and the mid-morning sun shone down brightly, warming the skin just enough to keep the cold, biting breeze from making it too unbearable.  Large icicles hung off of the overhang above her, and the air was fragrant with a mixed smell of wood burning fireplaces and pines trees.

Sam took in a deep breath of fresh mountain air, exhaling it slowly.  ‘Well, it can’t be that bad,’ she thought, turning to look back at her teammates and friends, who were in a discussion over sleeping arrangements.  ‘And it will be good to celebrate the holiday with friends.’  Sam knew there was no hope of her Dad making it back from whatever latest Tokra mission he was on, and she didn’t expect to hear from her brother.  More than likely, if she hadn’t come along, she would have been eating turkey at the base, in between shifts at her lab.

Jack watched Sam quietly out of the corner of his eye as he listened with patience to Daniel’s idea of how to work out the sleeping arrangements.  As if reading her thoughts, he knew that Sam was trying to convince herself that she had done the right thing in coming along.  Watching her wrestle with her conscious, he felt justified in planning this trip.  She needed this break, and who could blame him if it just so happened that Teal’c not only needed skiing lessons, but that there were still a lot of things to show him about this world.  It was the perfect excuse, and it wasn’t like any of them had any real family to speak of that was pressing them to come for a holiday visit.  He would have to make sure and give an extra thank you to the General for letting them use his family’s condo.  It was going to be a great next week.

He turned his attention back to the conversation long enough to discover that he had unknowingly won the sleeper sofa.  Sam was to get the room with the king-sized bed, while Teal’c and Daniel would share the other bedroom that had the two full-sized beds in it.

“Now wait a minute, Daniel,” Jack said, suddenly kicking himself mentally for briefly phasing out of the conversation.  “Why do I have to take the sleeper sofa?”

“Because, Jack,” Daniel said, slightly agitated at having to repeat himself, “I don’t sleep well on pull-out beds, and since you didn’t say anything, I just assumed…”

“Well, you assumed wrong.  I think there needs to be a little more discussion on this topic before we really decide anything.”  Jack crossed his arms over his chest, looking Daniel squarely in the face.

“I’ll take the sleeper sofa.  I don’t mind it,” Sam said, approaching them silently after leaving her spectacular vantage point.  Being out there for even a few moments had put her in high spirits, and she didn’t care where she slept.

Jack felt suddenly foolish for complaining.  “No, I’ll take it.  I was just giving Daniel a hard time.”

“Really, Jack, it’s fine.  You can have the king bed.  Besides, I rather like the idea of waking up each morning to that.”  She pointed in the direction from which she had just come, and smiled.

Jack watched her as he saw her face transform from a normally serious and matter-of-fact one, to one that didn’t seem to have a care in the world.  He couldn’t remember the last time, if ever, that she had seemed at peace.  And he found himself amazed at how even more beautiful it made her.  Managing to find his voice, he responded.  “Well, why don’t we just wait and see how you feel about it tonight after a day on the slopes.  Then we’ll see if you want to sleep in my bed…I mean the king sized bed, or on the sleeper sofa.”  Her eyes quickly settled on his as he stumbled over his last words.  Their looks held for a moment, making both of their hearts suddenly skip a beat over what he had just said.  It felt like the world had momentarily stopped, and nothing else existed.

Tearing his eyes away from hers, he directed his attention to Teal’c.  “Well, Teal’c, you ready to hit the slopes?”

Teal’c raised an eyebrow in his direction.  “How do you hit the slopes?”

Jack sighed, already seeing that this was going to be a bigger undertaking then he had first assumed.  “Well, how about we all get ready to go, and we’ll show you how it’s done.”

As they all began to gather up their things to put them in the appropriate rooms, Jack caught Sam out of the corner of his eye watching him.  He turned towards her as he was walking to his bedroom and smiled.  Sam felt her breath catch in her throat as her heart began to beat faster, realizing that she had been caught looking at him.  A slowly rising heat coursed through her body, making her cheeks flush a soft pink.

As she turned away, Jack couldn’t help but smile at how beautiful she really was, as the soft pink suddenly colored her cheeks, making her eyes sparkle an even deeper blue.  He was really going to enjoy this trip.

A few hours later, they found themselves at the base of Peak 8, ready to officially start their ski vacation.  They had stopped by one of the ski shops in town and had sufficiently geared themselves up for their adventure.  Teal’c was still trying to adjust himself to wearing the very awkward ski boots, finding it difficult to trudge along in the snow at the same pace as the others.

They all stopped at the base of the bunny slope.  It had been decided that it would probably be a good idea to have Teal’c start with the easiest slope possible, and it would give each of them a chance to warm their muscles up.

Jack looked at Teal’c and pointed.  “Well Teal’c, here’s your first lesson.  This is what’s called the bunny slope.”

“What is a bunny?”  Teal’c said astutely.

“A bunny is the same thing as a rabbit…you know, a little soft, white, furry creature that likes to hop around and wiggle it’s nose really fast.”  Jack waited for Teal’c response, hoping that he would understand.

Teal’c took a moment to look around before speaking again.  “I see no bunnies, O’Neill.”

Jack brought his fingers to the bridge of his nose and squeezed.  After a moment, he sighed, bringing his hand back down.  “No, Teal’c, it really has nothing to do with actual bunnies.”

“Then why is such a place called this?”  Teal’c raised his eyebrow at Jack, who had started to shake his head.

Daniel, seeing Jack’s frustration, finished for him.  “What Jack means Teal’c, is that it’s an expression.  Basically, this slope is the easiest to ski on, so it’s the best place to learn.”

            “I see.”

“Why don’t we just try it out,” Sam suggested, watching the exchange with amusement.

“Now that’s a great idea!” Jack said, with a little too much enthusiasm.  They all walked up the small slope, and then stopped and put their skis on.  Remarkably, it took no time at all for Teal’c to put his skis on, and after a few simple instructions on the basics of how to ski, they were casually shushing down the short slope.

Once they reached the bottom, Teal’c looked much more confident, and appeared to have even enjoyed himself.  “So Teal’c, what do you think?  Did you enjoy your first run?”  Sam gave him a smile, reassuring him that he did great.

“Indeed.  Thank you Captain Carter.  The bunny slope was quite enjoyable.”

“Hey, that’s nothing.  Wait until you try a real slope.”  Jack patted him on the shoulder and gave it a squeeze.  “You feel ready enough to try a bigger slope?”

Teal’c simply bowed his head in agreement, and Jack, who was quite relieved that Teal’c had managed the bunny slope so well, nodded in the direction of the chair lift.  “Well, let’s get moving then.  We don’t want to let the line get too long.  Otherwise, we’ll miss out on all that great fresh powder.”

“Powder?”  Teal’c raised his eyebrow, once again speculating at Jack’s expression.

“It means snow, Teal’c,” Sam said, intervening before Jack had a chance to explode in frustration.  “As the day goes on, and more and more people have skied down the slopes, the snow becomes compacted and very hard.  Once this happens, the surface becomes very rough to ski on, and is very slick.  So, it’s better to ski in the morning, after a night of hopefully new snowfall.”

Teal’c, satisfied with her answer to his question, bowed his head once more.

“Well, let’s move out then, campers,” Jack said, leading the way to the chair lift, which luckily didn’t have too long of a line formed yet.

As they were standing in line, Daniel explained to Teal’c how the chair lift worked, and, using the example of the skiers ahead of them, how to get on it.  Teal’c seemed a little concerned about how it worked, but Jack simply gave him a reassuring smile.

“Hey, not to worry, big guy.  Sam and I will go ahead of you two and show you how it’s done.  It’s a piece of cake….really.  There’s no need to be concerned.”

They got to the front of the line, and Jack and Sam positioned themselves in front of the next empty chair, and it scooped them up, lifting them immediately towards the top.  They both looked back in time to see Teal’c and Daniel successfully load onto the chair behind them.

“Well, I must say,” Jack said, happy to have Sam to himself for a moment, “Teal’c is doing surprisingly well for someone who has never skied before.  Maybe we don’t need to stay the whole time we’d planned on.”

Sam, who was enjoying herself a lot more than she thought she would, responded quickly.  “Oh, I think since we’re here, we might as well stay and enjoy all the time we get together.”  Not realizing before it was too late that what she’d said could be taken two ways, she looked over at Jack.

Their eyes met, and for a split second, Jack forgot who and where they were, and started to reach out for her hand.  Suddenly realizing what he was doing, he quickly retracted it, and gave her a smile instead.  The chair lift ran up over the next pole, and the chair jolted slightly.  The vibration startled both of them, snapping them out of the eye contact that had seemed to consume them.  Neither one of them said anything else the rest of the way up the lift.  They both just seemed to enjoy the silence, the beauty of their surroundings, and the presence of each other’s company.

They reached the top and slid off the lift easily, skiing a short distant away to wait for Daniel and Teal’c.  The sun sat high in the sky, shining down brightly, illuminating the snow as it sparkled all around them.  The air was cold, and a brisk wind had picked up as they reached the top.

Sam and Jack watched the pair of skiers that had been in the chair ahead of them as they took off on their run down the mountain.  Unaware to each of them, Teal’c and Daniel had reached the top and were dismounting from the chair lift.  With their backs turned and their stocking caps pulled down over their ears, they failed to hear Daniel calling out to them.

“So, Sam, do you really think that Teal’c will be able to…..” Jack turned around as he said this, just in time to see Teal’c sliding quickly, and obviously out of control, towards Sam.  “Watch out!”

Sam, confused by his sudden change in tone, barely had enough time to look behind her.  Before she knew what was happening, Teal’c came plowing into her, and as he instinctively grabbed onto her for support, both of them tumbled backwards onto the snow.

Daniel came to a stop next to Jack, who had immediately found the humor in the situation, and was laughing as he went to help Sam up.  Finding his laughter infectious, both Sam and Daniel started in with him as she tried to get to her feet, with little success.  Jack reached a hand out to her, trying to contain some of his laughter.  “Are you two okay?”

Taking Jack’s hand, Sam pulled herself to her feet, still laughing at how funny the situation actually was.  “Yeah, I’m fine, thanks.  My tailbone may be complaining in the morning, but then, since I’ll be skiing for the next few days, the rest of my body will probably be sore too.”

Teal’c, failing to see the humor in the situation, spoke up as Daniel helped him to his feet.  “I am truly sorry, Captain Carter.  I lost control as I got off that lift.  I did not expect to have to ski right away.”

“Hey, no problem Teal’c.  I’m just glad I was able to help you stop.”  Sam gave him a reassuring smile, letting him know that it was fine as she brushed the snow off from the back of her ski pants.

“Yeah,” Jack said, still running through the incident in his mind.  “Otherwise, who knows where you might have stopped.  I don’t think a tree would have been as forgiving.”  He patted Teal’c on the shoulder, who finally seemed to be relaxing about the situation.

After a few moments, Daniel spoke up.  “So, are we ready to try this?”

“How ‘bout it, Teal’c?  You ready?  Cause there’s really only one way down this mountain.”  Jack smiled at Sam and gave her a quick wink, knowing that Teal’c could always take the chair lift back down, but didn’t want to give him that option.

“I am ready, O’Neill.”  Teal’c had managed to regain his composure, and it was obvious the warrior in him was not going to letting a small mishap steer him away from a challenge.

“Okay, well Sam and I will lead off, and just do what we do.”  Jack put on his goggles, preparing to start his run.

Daniel couldn’t resist being a little sarcastic about the obvious confidence level Jack was displaying.  “Wow, Jack, are you sure that you’re that confident in your skiing abilities.  Cause back on the bunny slope, you kind of had a few shaky moments….”

“Yes, Daniel, I’m sure.  Now, are you going to ski or not?!”  Jack, trying to ignore the display of sarcasm, went back to focusing on the path in front of them.  Sam turned around and gave Daniel a hidden smile, and he returned hers.  The deep friendship and appreciation that had been established between the four of them was defined by the moments that found them.  And each of them knew just how to enjoy the special ones.

They took off down the mountain, slowly at first so that Teal’c would be able to get the feel of the terrain under his skis.  As they each became more adjusted to it, they picked up speed, enjoying the rush of wind against their face.  The smell of the snow, the natural adrenaline that coursed through their veins, the sound of the snow shushing as they transversed the course in front of them, and the pure, simple feeling of freedom that came as they continued to ski down the mountain.  All of this, along with knowing that they were able to share these feelings with each other, helped them to have a great first run.

They skied for the rest of the day, stopping for lunch at a little café at the base of the mountain.  Teal’c was thoroughly enjoying himself, and quickly becoming a person who loved to ski, amazing Jack, Sam, and Daniel with how good he was at it.  As the sun started it’s decent over the horizon, they headed back to condo.  Happily exhausted, they got cleaned up and went out to a local restaurant for dinner, having no energy to even prepare the most basic meal.

After getting back from dinner, they all got comfortable on the adjacent couches, and settled in for a movie.  Jack had taken the time to get the fireplace going when they got back, which was now going nicely.  The flames quietly popped and danced, reflecting their brilliant red and orange glow off the surrounding room.  It had begun to snow, with large flakes coming down at a heavy rate.  The promise of great powder for skiing tomorrow was being fulfilled.

After an hour into the movie, Sam got a craving, and went to the kitchen in hopes of filling it.  After opening a few cupboards, she found what she was looking for, and made her way back into the living room.

“Anyone up for some S’mores?”  Sam looked at Jack and smiled, as his face lit up like a kid who had just received a great gift at Christmas.

“Great idea, Captain!  Teal’c, Daniel, you up for it?”

“Sure thing.  I haven’t done this in a long time.”  Daniel pushed the coffee table out of the way to make room for all of them to sit in a semi-circle around the fire.

Teal’c, unsure of what to do, quietly followed suit, and took his place next to Daniel.  “What is a S’more?”

Jack happily answered his question.  “A S’more is probably one of the best things there is…you take a marshmallow and put it on this metal stick.  Then, you hold it over the flame until you get it nice and toasty…like this.”  Jack demonstrated, holding his marshmallow over the flame.  “Once the marshmallow is nice and soft, then you put it on a graham cracker, put a piece of chocolate on top of that, and then cover it with a second graham cracker.  It’s great!  You’ll love it.”

As Jack pulled his marshmallow out of the fire to check it, he got it too close to a licking flame, and it caught on fire.  Jack quickly blew it out and looked at it.

“Or, you can do what Jack did, and get it really toasty, and personally, I like them that way.”  Daniel gave Jack a smile, trying not to laugh at the look of disappointment on his face.

“Okay Daniel,” Jack said, handing him his stick.  “There you go.  Your first marshmallow, all toasty warm.”  Jack returned Daniel’s smirk, satisfied that Daniel had failed to irritate him.

“Thanks Jack.  That is very nice of you.”  Daniel tried to ignore the smile on Jack’s face, and proceeded to show Teal’c how a S’more was made.  Sam, thoroughly enjoying watching the exchange, shook her head and smiled, contentment coursing through her body.

She handed Jack another stick, and as he went to take it, their fingertips touched, and her breath caught in her throat at the feel of them.  She looked over at him and smiled, not wanting to let go of the moment.  Jack’s eyes reflected the flames, and sent heat waves through her body.  He smiled back at her, and with Daniel and Teal’c occupied, they allowed themselves a moment to enjoy the connection, fading out everything thing else that was around them.

Jack was transfixed by how beautiful the firelight made her look, reminding him of their most recent mission to P2X-555, which had inadvertently sent them back in time to 1969, due to what he now understood as a solar flare.  His heart had done flip flops then too as they had sat around the campfire, trying to figure out a way to get back into the future.  He didn’t get to see her in regular clothes very often, and she had looked surprisingly sexy in the clothes she had bought, even if they were a little out-of-date.  He remembered the firelight dancing off her skin and hair, making them both glow.   He had purposely sat close to her on that log, loving the feel of her arm as it nestled comfortably into his.

And now, here they were, side by side again, their fingers touching, and he didn’t want to let go.  The fire popped loudly, making them all jump, and broke the spell that had both of them mesmerized.  They gave each other another quick smile before turning towards the fire to roast their marshmallows, and this time, as they turned, they found themselves sitting closer to each other.  And they made no effort to change it.

The next few days, they found themselves not only skiing the slopes of Breckenridge, but they also skied at nearby Copper Mountain, loving the variety of courses offered to them there, finding the “Timberline Express” to be one of their favorites.  They’d even found a little eating place about halfway down the run called “The T-Rex Grill”, and enjoyed snacks and a hot cup of coffee to warm their bodies.  They even got adventurous and tried skiing Keystone at night.  There was sufficient lighting for them to ski by on the slope they had chosen, called the “Peru Express”, better known as “The Gandala”.  But rather from exhaustion of skiing all day, or the spookiness that came from the surrounding black forest, they just didn’t find the full satisfaction that came to them when skiing during the day.

On there third night there, Thanksgiving Day, they went to the grocery store and bought a fully prepared turkey and all the fixings that would complement it.  They went back to the condo, and as Jack and Sam got the food into serving bowls, Daniel and Teal’c set the table.  After about 20 minutes, they all took their places around the table.  Before cutting into the turkey, Jack suggested a toast.

Holding up his glass, he started.  “To our trip, and all the memories that go with it.  And to Teal’c, for showing us all up on the slopes with his newly discovered ability to ski.”  They all laughed and held up their glasses, taking a drink.

“And to friendship.  Through it all, we have survived some amazing things, and from that, have built a deep friendship that not only makes us good friends, but great teammates.”  As Daniel finished, they all smiled at each other, and drank to the toast of thanks.

“Well said, Daniel.  And I want to not only toast to our friendship, but the wonderful times that it’s brought, and to all of those people who have made it possible.  And to General Hammond, for letting us use his family’s condo, and giving us more time together to build our memories on.”  They all raised their glasses and drank as Sam finished her toast.  She glanced over in Jack’s direction, their eyes holding for a few seconds, and a private moment of thanks for each other seemed to flow between them.  They smiled at each other in understanding before turning their attention to Teal’c.

“And I want to thank each of you for giving me not only a new home and friendship, but for helping me to discover the wonders of this world.  It is truly an amazing place.”  They all raised their glasses and brought them together, the crystal ringing in harmony.

After they finished taking their drink, Jack spoke up.  “Well, Teal’c, you’re very welcome.  I know that we’re more than happy to take you on trips like these to show you around.  I mean, hey, it’s the least we can do.”  Sam and Daniel privately smiled at Jack’s sarcasm.  The rest of the dinner was complemented with stories and jokes, and Daniel even explained to Teal’c the way that Thanksgiving Day had come about, and what it truly meant.

As they were cleaning up the dishes, the phone rang for the first time since they’d been there.  Jack answered it, and greeted General Hammond, who was obviously on the other end of the phone.  Watching Jack’s face as he listened, Sam saw that his expression went from carefree to one of irritation.

“Yes, sir, I understand.  Yes, sir, we will….Yes, sir.”  He hung up the phone, and looked at Sam.  “You and I have to go back, tonight.”

“Why?  Has something happened?” Sam asked with concern.

“Not in my book.  Kinsey is stirring up trouble again, and the General needs us in Washington by tomorrow afternoon.”  Jack clenched his fists in frustration, fuming at the fact that Kinsey was treating them like they were at his beck and call.

“Well, why don’t we all just go back?”  Daniel suggested.

“There’s no need.  The General seems to think this should only take a day, and then he said we can come back up here and take a few extra days if we want to make up for it.  You two might as well stay here and enjoy the skiing.  Who knows when we’ll get to do this again.  We should be back by the day after tomorrow.”  Jack tried to look at the situation with hope, but whenever Kinsey was involved, there was usually little to be hopefully about.

“What’s Senator Kinsey wanting to talk to us about?”  Sam said, feeling Jack’s frustration at this little side trip.

“Who knows what Kinsey’s got up his butt this time, but he’s interrupting our vacation, and that alone is enough for me to want to slug him.”  Jack sighed before continuing.  “It’s something about the Stargate program, of course, and the progress we’ve been making, or in his eyes, the lack there of.  I swear, if that man ever gets a life, I’m going to personally throw him a party!”

Reluctantly, one hour later, Jack and Sam were driving south, away from the condo, away from their friends, away from their vacation, and definitely away from fun.  They rode silently in the truck, Sam instinctively knowing to let Jack work out his frustrations internally.  The highway they were on was deserted, except for the occasional car that passed them, heading in the direction they had just come from.  The road curved slowly around the mountain, gradually descending to a lower elevation.  The night was cold, and clouds filled the sky, full of percipation, ready to fill their surrounding with new snow.  Though it hadn’t started snowing yet, the roads were slightly slick from the dropping temperatures, and Jack took his time going around the curves, grateful for the 4X4 traction that his truck had.

As they descended even lower, the trees worked their way up closer to the road, expanding out, and filling the night with even more darkness than before.  As Jack steered his truck around another bend, his headlights suddenly captured a large deer that came bounded out in front of them, only a few feet away.  Instinctively, Jack slammed on his brakes.  The trucks tires locked, applying a force to the ground that the tires couldn’t grip.  Sliding, the truck pulled itself into a spin, circling 360 degrees before slamming into the guardrail that gave out under the force of the hit.  Only slowing the truck down slightly, it bounced off the road and over the guardrail, and went barreling down the slope, narrowly missing trees as it bounced over rocks that lay jutting out of the ground.  Suddenly, one of the truck’s front tires hit a fallen tree that was too big to bounce over.  The truck flipped up and over, landing on its roof, and slid the rest of the way down, finally coming to a stop a few hundred feet down the ridge.

As the truck plummeted down the hill, all Jack could think of was trying to keep them alive, as Sam’s screams invaded his ears.  As the truck hit the fallen tree and started to flip, the last thing Jack did was look over at Sam, who sat gripping anything she could find to hold onto.  Already, a trickle of blood streamed down from her temple.  Feeling his eyes on her, she looked quickly over at him.  At that moment, he allowed one of his hands to leave the steering wheel, and he grabbed her hand.  The last thing he felt was her hand squeezing his, before total blackness consumed his mind.

To be continued…….
